A stack of 16x16cm letterpressed cards, 2017-18

Bio

I am a Cardiff based artist making autobiographical work, exploring the intimacies of living with chronic pain and depression. As both artist and patient, I am developing meditative processes of art making that sit within practices such as printing, sculpture, casting, letterpress, performance and film. These processes create physical narratives of my experience of illness and sense of self, externalising the internal. My interest in process as a form of ritual in art making and the effect of that on the self leads me to typically title each piece simply as a reference to said process, that in actuality produces a far greater number of pieces than exhibited and is never truly complete.

Letterpress:17, consists of a stack of seventeen letterpressed cards. Each print contains fragments of thoughts taken from personal journals during periods of illness, that were then reproduced in the time consuming but very intimate and therapeutic process of letter pressing. The piece seeks to honour the body in illness by revisiting words from that time and giving them new meaning, this allows illness to be the vehicle through which art is made, as opposed to the reason it is not. Some narratives relate to the breeding of trauma and the loss of the self, others describe the presence of physical pain or relate to the body as a space, while others reflect on what becomes of the domestic space during periods of illness and prolonged rest. Many of the cards have multiple meanings and each one, being without capitalisation or punctuation and repeated multiple times in the stack, suggests that the overall narrative is without beginning or end; this reflects the cycle of chronic illness and the way in which the self, body and illness become one.
