Bio

Wenhui Jiang (b.1996) is a London-based visual artist who works with multi-disciplinary subjects and media. She recently graduated with a MA in experimental communication from the Royal College of Art (London, UK). Wenhui is fascinated by exploring critical visual narratives. She uses the philosophy of pessimism as a lens filter for observing the outside. Her works attempt to construct a radical possibility by blurring the boundaries between the real and the virtual.

This project is trying to expand the boundaries of the illness narrative of chronic pain. As a chronic pain patient, I am suffering from a disease called spondylitis ankylosis. I attempt to create a model of disease self-narration based on my own experience. To take the marginalisation of chronic pain as the entry point. It seeks to explore the ethical issue of chronic pain raised by posthumanism that patients' pain is not isolated in the sick body.

Chronic pain is about the physicality of the illness but is never isolated to the individual patient's pain. The pain that surrounds the chronic pain sufferer is multifaceted, constructed by entangled relationships in contact with the outside world. The complexity of chronic pain is discussed in this work in terms of the slowness of the healthcare system, the limitations of medical diagnosis, the limitations of the general public's understanding of chronic pain, and the lack of care for invisible illnesses. Purgatory is used as a metaphor to present the plight of chronic pain patients. This will raise awareness and concern about chronic pain disorders.
